Bored?

Yeah....2 mins of animating gets you....a guy doing a thumbs up. Just checking a few things with the character and therefore playing around. Lovely....yeah this isn't great work but it's all a proto haha

Ok...Soooo

Ooook... this is just a thought I had. Still need to discuss with Sam so may not go ahead. We may just keep it plain without all the buildings etc but I just thought of it, so I'm blogging it.

Reporting For Duty

So today saw me laying out UVs for the Jeep and re-re-re-re-re-rendering on Qube... The renders we keep sending just KEEP failing for some reason... Sam and I have a feeling that it's something to do with the layers (occlusion layer imparticularly) or perhaps the way we've split up the layers... or perhaps the RenderFarm cannot handle the layers... not entirely sure at the moment. We are rendering a few shots early to set the standard and will have some shots ready and finished early (we hope). Images of the Texture Map will follow...

Ok so not a texture Map....yet....as I just closed it and can't be botherd to open it at the moment. heres some pretty pictures though.

Before and After:

Maya quit after being unresponsive

... How annoying.... was texturing the jeep and that happens.... and unfortunately I lost all I had done.... second time tonight...and therefore time for a time out.  I think I'll do it tomorrow after work late night.... we'll see.

Wish It Didn't Look like this

Eugh...texture after texture after image after film...after film....one day I'll clean it up...along with all the Crap on my mac..... maybe that'll make it more alive....maybe that'll give it some juice ;)

In other news....

Been re-colouring Ray... done the basics... touching up still needed and cheeky details always welcome... no bump yet...so more experimentation needed obviously.

Reeeesearch

Work done in Zbrush... not by me.... but DAMN a guy can dream lol ... Be inspired animators...be inspired.

Rays Latest

Sloppy second attempt :D

Clearly work on the hands is needed to get them looking a little bit better...was going to give the 'grubby' feel to them but we'll see.

Didn't cover the whole object :p

This time I spent 10 mins on the colouring IN ^^ lol yeah not in the mood for texturing Ray...still experimenting... Bump mapping should be interesting. I may stretch out the UVs to make it easier to paint/ colour in with correct colours....splendid lol

The Last Hour

WHAT A MESS THOUGH HUH!?...

Been texturing the guy - this was just to see how hard/ easy it would be.  I still havn't quite finished.  Minor alteration that will be hard to see but will result in a better model and look overall I hope.  Looks like texturing will be fairly easy for the character after mapping out the UVs and playing around in the Texture Editor.  After reading no tutorials about how to do this I just decided I'd jump in and try... I think I can manage how I'm doing it :D I THINK.... but it may not be the correct way at all.  But as time is always against us perhaps this is not the time to learn it right now!  And yeah I know he looks yellow at the moment but as I said this is a TEST!

And the Next one...

I think this version seems to work a LOT better than the previous.  The back two lights are Point lights and the front ones are Volume... my verdict is the back two seem to work better personally... Sam any comments?

TrainTest_01

Ok so I wipped this together just in the last 5 minutes.  I've got another one rendering but this will do for now.  playing around with Maya's Motion Blur settings and wondering if it will work on a plane with a glow... as you can see its not REALLY the effect I wanted (looks pretty lame to be honest).  My hopes lie with adding lights to each carriage and then blurring it... alternatively I could leave the blurring until post but why bother if Maya works perfectly fine... we'll see in the next render...coming soon :)

The Normal and the Extrodinary

Most likely use the top image ... but I wanted to experiement with really exagerating the wheel size... ends up looking a bit like a monster truck however I don't think it'll really work as it won't fit too well in the garage - he'll hit his head on the roof if he tries and gets in :p...
Still need the grate on the front however am considering just texturing it on...

Roll Bars Added

Found the Image I was looking for the other day Sam...there it is....so far...so good...its getting there but theres still more minor details that'll be nice to have on it :D

Argh

I love it when this happens...it means everything I just did has to be DONE AGAIN!... so much fun..so much joy... took the last 15minutes sorting it out. I'll get you back Maya...Ohhh I'll teach you a lesson!

Ps

Train is rigged... for those easy to manage corners ^^

Sam ... was thinking the lighting on this isn't too important as it stands as its an extra still... so I  figured do it together/another time

Train Almost Done...

Just needs to be a basic train as its going to have some motion blur on I figured so I modelled this in the space of about...well...from last post to this post haha

Quick Choo Choo

Dan: 'Its happening baby!'  Today... on his own...working.... talking to himself..... *holds head in hands* what has it come to lol...

Bump That ROOM

The most recent is at the top... the stages of development are below... I used a different bump map to the actual texture so I could change the bump around the room - boost it in some places and weaken it in others.

The BlackBoard and Toolbox

Rays Messy Blackboard ... main area. Compiled of different layers before I got rid of most of it to make space for the interactional options.

Now this is the different layers so you can actually see whats going on in the different pages.  They mean nothing its just a lot of gobbled-de-goob and different aspects of different games in there.

And the final thing...with no bump at the moment.  I say final I still need to add some TINY alterations such as a few odd faces wrong colour etc.... but you get the feel of the image.

Just sneaking into that image its possible to see the red toolbox... TEXTURED.  Again a tiny amount of bump on it... because if you put on too much....

You end up looking like a CRISP PACKET!!! WHEYYY!

Darren and Giles - Guest Lecturerereres

Today we had two ex Ravers come in and talk to us about how it was and where they now stand a few years down the line from doing the course.  I found this quite interesting to say the least.
They mentioned a number of good points which I thought were brilliant.  Both Giles and Darren seemed really down to earth guys even if they seemed a little scared at first I think they warmed to us by the end of the morning with Yaniv throwing questions at him left right and centre and they doing the best to struggle with the answers.

Background Info of the two:
Giles worked as a runner to start with at Passion Pictures and then kept tapping on shoulders and met the right people and now he does a lot of compositing for them along with other things.
NB - BBC olympic games Ident by Passion Pictures - a lot of 2D planes in 3D space.
Darren was heavily 2D in his years at Rave and pretty much refused to do 3D however he knows a little now.  At the degree show he was approached by two mobile phone companies due to his individual look and style and manged to get a job through these contacts.  He has recently worked for Top Man, HMV and Tony and Guy creating Idents for each company

Heres just a few notes I took while they were talking and taking it all in...
Only about half of the graduates have been empolyed since they did the course but if your eager enough you'll get somewhere - starting as a runner is a place to start however could earn you something around 16K a year which is about 30-40 quid a day.  After a few appriasals later Giles is now earning between the 23 and 27K mark.
A program called Mirrage is very useful for doing things such as SFX such as leaves and dust... Look into for our project?
The dust that Giles used for his Olympics film was half real dust overlayed and half CG dust.. possibly use for our project... filming dust - if I can find somewhere thats dusty enough.
Make sure you have a can do attitude and talk to people.  Say yes and then worry about the consequences later.  You let something pass it may not come your way again!!
Jared recommends ' Try running - meet a lot of people'
Darren says not to get big headed as he thought he was one of the best after doing his third year but he now finds himself still learning - learning doesnt finish when you graduate - it does when you die!??!
If your going to attempt to do freelance work you need contacts - if you don't have contacts no one will ask you to do work... no work.... no money - no money ... no house - no house... no independance - no independance YOU LIVE AT HOME WITH YOUR MUM AND DAD WHEN YOUR 30!?!±@$!??
Rushes - they had a bad experience with - Giles had to sit in a room with others and WAIT for a call down 'LUNCH NOW' and they they would have to rush about preparing food for them... EUGH. He left.
See Rockband 2 intro - Mad Max influence. Giles wrote - correction by Darren - CO-wrote.  5 Month project in total.
Sony Bravia TV advert with the bunnies was stop frame... tiny bit of animation?
Passion Pictures use XSI not Maya but the skillset of the 3D program should pass over which is good news.

Thats all really.  They had a look at what Sam and I were doing which was cool and seemed to be pretty impressed by Sams 2D work and the 3D work we had presented so far (not a lot I must say).  I'm glad they liked it - we must be doing something right!

Update From dwShufflebotham

This is the part which I start to enjoy, a lot of the basic modelling is out of the way now and now its down to the renders where things are starting to look good.  There is still the animation to break the pretty pictures but hopefully this will all go smoothly like the rest of the project.  I have to add more and more detail to the vehicle as I feel its a key element, along with the atmosphere and the main room itself.  Considering this is the whole interactive experience and the world we create I feel it has to look as best as we can get it... I just hope it does...

I think that we are almost on track.  Everything has sort of overlapped though now but I believe we'll get it all done in the correct time frame.  We have however needed to miss some parts off of the interactivity side of it.  This had to be done as we counted we would have needed approximately 40-50 renders for all the different possibilities that COULD happen.

Jeep Update

Adding a few little details now... Just as I really wasn't in the mood for sticking to the rules.  The jeep is going ok but like with most models you have times when you dont really want to work on something but feel you should.  I added the lights and the steering wheel now and gear sticks... I'm thinking they may be seen... depends on angles but only took 5 mins to model so whipped them together.  I think my modelling skills have got better considering I'm looking at a real life vehicle and attempting to model it in few polys (but not worrying too much as this part doesn't count in the Poly Count of the Garage.

Interior_Shot_01

Interior Screen Shot so far.

Good Arm

Ohhhh he's making me BLUSH now... lol one of the poses we are going to need.... hope you like Sam... I've rigged him and starting weighting now.  Mind you I'm not a character builder as it stands so I'm still learning as it goes.  I've put limits on the points to where they'd roughly go but I'd go through that with you at a later date!

Painting weights is never fun for me.  I've never really got to grips with it and it takes me a long time.  I guess a tip for all those who read this is to start slowly and keep working at it.  Be careful of taking off weight from ONE area and it going back to a already weighted area.  Try locking them when you finish.... for some reason this doesn't always work for me either....but I get there eventually normally.... I hope I will anyway.

Been Working Again...

On to the rigging now... but I'm not too sure how much further I can get with him at home considering my Mac doesn't seem to like working with Ray anymore and seems to want to do everything VERY slowly... select point....wait....wait....WAIIIIIIIIT.....ok there you go.....select OBJECT....THAT OBJECT?!...which one...which one......THERE IT IS!.... just takes ages...Grr.... so I might have to paint weights and finish him tomorrow at uni.

Nb to self...hands are big...can scale them once rigged which is interesting... doesn't take long.  Talk to Sam about this tomorrow.

Altering the Head?

Trying to get a direct comparison here... Think the Jaw is too big but I really want to over emphasise it as this is the style in which it has been drawn and I want to continue the style into the modeling to a certain degree (not too much but a little)

Also I think Sam and I will probably use the unalterd version as this Sideways mouth thing doesn't seem to work the way Sam can draw it... and we don't want to attempt a half assed modeling job.

Image for Lewis..

This post was designed to show lewis what he is doing is right....  just needs to keep working at it! But by no means am I an expert lol
